Biography

Bucktown — Michelle Tan took her first sewing lesson in fourth grade and instantly became interested in fashion. After graduating from the International Academy of Design and Technology in 1999, she traveled to Asia for inspiration and to search for yarns and fabrics. Her first collection under her own name, Michelle Tan, was launched in 2000. Tan’s devotion to deconstruction and details has made her one of Chicago’s fastest growing designers.

In 2000 she won the “Style Maker and Rule Breaker” award by Fashion Group International and in 2001 she won the Marshall Field’s “Distinction Award” and sold her line to Marshall Field’s. Now, Michelle Tan is available at over 60 stores across the US and abroad. She was a featured designer in Fashion Focus Chicago 2005, both in Gen Art’s Fresh Faces in Fashion 2005 and in Marshall Field’s Chicago Designer Shop, Fashion Focus 2006 and 2007 Macy’s Designers of Chicago Show, and during Fashion Focus 2007 at the Macy’s Chicago Designer Shop.
